Room to Belong: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in Student Accommodation

This is a full-day, interactive Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) training, specifically designed for professionals working in student accommodation. The course aims to empower participants with practical tools and knowledge to create inclusive and equitable environments for students from diverse backgrounds.

This in-person course is ideal for university accommodation staff, private sector housing providers, residential life teams, and those involved in student welfare, housing services, or support roles within Higher Education (HE).

This session is a great opportunity for professionals in student accommodation to deepen their understanding of DEIB principles and practices, ensuring that student living environments are safe, inclusive, and supportive for all.

Sam is an experienced DEIB consultant with a deep understanding of equality, inclusion, and diversity issues in the HE sector. With a passion for creating positive student living experiences, Sam brings both practical insights and academic rigor to the training.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the Nine Protected Characteristics:
    Understand the key elements of equality legislation and how it applies to students, both within university housing and private sector accommodation.
  • Understand the Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in Student Accommodation:
    Appreciate the role of equality, diversity, and inclusion in promoting a positive living experience for students. Gain insights into the sources of support typically available to students in both university and private accommodation settings.
  • Discover Current HE Trends:
    Explore changing demographics in student populations, including the rise in international students and value-driven behaviors that are shaping the student accommodation sector.
  • Discuss Discrimination in University Settings:
    Identify and discuss forms of discrimination that may arise in student living environments. Learn to recognise the signs of exclusion and discrimination, and how to address these issues in a sensitive and effective manner.
  • Provide Positive Examples of Inclusive Environments:
    Explore case studies and examples of best practices that promote inclusive, safe, and supportive environments for all students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.

 

This full-day, in-person training will incorporate a mix of presentations, group discussions, case studies, and interactive activities.
